Designing for distance
A poster has to work from across a room. A common sign-maker rule of thumb is about one inch of letter height for every 10 feet of viewing distance for basic legibility, and more for real impact. For an 11 × 17 in poster read from a few metres, keep the headline to three to five words and make it fill most of the width.
- One focal point. A single photo or a single huge word. Two competing focal points read as noise from far away.
- High contrast. Dark on light or light on dark. Mid-tone text on a photo disappears at a distance.
- QR code at chest height. People scan when they walk up, so put the code low and give it at least 1 inch per side.

What size should a poster be?
Tabloid (11 × 17 in) is the most common size for community boards and shop windows. 18 × 24 in suits bulletin boards and event entrances, and 24 × 36 in is the classic large poster. A3 (297 × 420 mm) is the standard outside North America.
What resolution do I need to print a poster?
300 DPI is ideal for anything viewed up close. Large posters are seen from a metre or more away, so 150–200 DPI prints sharply. FlyerCraft exports 11 × 17 at 300 DPI and scales the biggest sizes down just enough to stay within browser memory.
