Flyer sizes and dimensions
The standard flyer size is US Letter, 8.5 × 11 in in North America and A4, 210 × 297 mm everywhere else. For handouts, half letter (5.5 × 8.5 in) and A5 (148 × 210 mm) are the usual picks. Every size below is available in the flyer maker.

A-series sizes follow ISO 216: each size is half the one above it, and every sheet has the same 1 : √2 ratio, so an A5 design scales up to A4 or A3 without cropping. US sizes don't share one ratio, which is why a Letter design needs adjusting to fit A4.
Why 300 DPI? See it
DPI (dots per inch) is how many pixels are packed into each inch of paper. Screens look fine at around 100 pixels per inch because you view them from further away, but paper held at reading distance needs roughly 300 to look sharp, which is why print shops ask for 300 DPI files. You need 612 × 792 px (0.5 megapixels).
The magnified square is half an inch of paper. Pixels per inch set how much detail fits into it; the number of pixels a phone screen shows says nothing about print sharpness.
Bleed, trim and the safe zone
Commercial printers print on oversized sheets and cut them down with a guillotine. The blade can land a millimetre or so off. Bleed is extra background, 0.125 in (3 mm) per side in the US and 3 mm in Europe, that gets cut away so colour always reaches the edge. The safe zone is the matching margin inside the trim line where text should stay so it never gets clipped. Try trimming with and without bleed:

For your own printer, leave bleed off; most home printers can't print to the edge anyway and leave a margin of about 0.25 in.
Choosing the right size
- Pinned on a board or taped in a window: Letter or A4, or tabloid 11 × 17 in if it has to be read from across the street.
- Handed out or left on counters: half letter, A5 or DL. Cheaper to print and people will actually pocket them.
- Mailed: 4 × 6 in or 5 × 7 in postcards; check your postal service's size rules before printing a batch.
- Shared online: any size works; download the PNG. Portrait formats take up more room in a phone feed.
